Entry from: Iquitos, Peru Entry Title: "Welcome to the land of MotoTaxis!!" Entry: "Iquitos holds the title of the world's largest city that can't be reached by road. It is an Island to the Amazon river and its tributaries. During late 19th century, a rubber boom made the rich and the indigenous people poorer. Iquitos' main claim to fame now is as a drop point to make treks into the Amazon jungle. We started our adventure into the Amazon with a LAN flight to Iquitos. Our first glimpse of the Amazon was from the airplane window, where we could see miles and miles of snaking wide river. When we landed, we could immediately feel the difference in the environment. The humidity clearly told us we were in the jungle! We were picked up by our car taxi, but quickly learned that cars are few and far between in Iquitos. Modified 3-wheeled motorcycle taxis are the mode of transportation in Iquitos - and there were thousands of them dumping air and noise pollution around the city. The first image of Iquitos was chaos, stifling smog, lots of people, lots of dogs, colorful buildings with murals and graffiti. The main shopping district was lined with electronics and clothes and plumbing stores, and there were street vendors on every corner selling refrescos (local squeezed fruit juices) and fresh fruits.
